A couple years ago I was visiting a friend at the Miami International Boat Show who owned the Navigator dealership for South Florida. Directly across the dock was the Hampton display. I saw the writing on the wall back then. One one side there was Navigator, Sea Ray and a couple of other American built boats. The Navigator 51' had a BASE price of $900k, had zero electronics, and was pretty much a 'plain Jane'. Directly behind this Navigator was a new Hampton 55' that had Stabilizers, Stidd Helm seat, full electronics, bow thruster, and a fit and finish that was truly incredible- with a price "out the door, FULLY equipped" at a price LESS than the base price of an inferior product behind them. Which boats sold at the show? Which one would YOU buy? Right then-I saw that there was no way that American boat builders could compete with this high quality Chinese product. There was NO way they could stay in business when a buyer could buy a better looking, better built, better equipped yacht for WAY less money. My friend with the Navigator dealership closed it down in 2008. Meridian is building few boats after closing the Meridian plant in Washington State down for good in 2007, Carver filed bankruptcy in 2009, and pretty much all yacht manufacturers have quit building new yachts as of 10/09. ONLY Hampton is actively building new boats. Most all other builders are STILL TODAY trying to liquidate all their unsold new (some built back in 07!) boats they still have in inventory. There's a reason why.
If you inspect one of these yachts you too, will be very impressed. First of all, they are beautiful designs, which is always a good thing, but not only are they handsome, but they are VERY well constructed with a fit and finish usually only seen on the finest most expensive yachts in the world. When you see the quality of the hinges to the pilothouse, this pretty much tells you everything you need to know as the rest of the boat, is just as well constructed. Over constructed it may be said. Huge amounts of storage too.
Built in mainland China in plants built from scratch using the most modern construction techniques and technology. The woodwork is "old school" which takes years of experience and skills to learn. Everybody knows the Chinese are some of the best woodworkers in the world, right along with the Dutch. OH- PRICE... WELL below other marques of the same size, but of higher quality. I'll be happy to show you one of these yachts in detail if you like.
